The Closer We Walk

Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who is walking far ahead of you? You may see them, but you cannot hear them clearly. The farther the distance, the harder it becomes to understand what they are saying.
Our relationship with God can be like that. We may still pray from time to time. But when life becomes busy, noisy, and distracted, we can slowly create distance. And then we wonder why His voice feels harder to hear.
Noah’s life shows us what it means to stay close to God. We often focus on the ark and the flood. But before Noah built anything, Scripture tells us: “Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9).
That is where his courage came from. He trusted God even when he could not see what was ahead, because walking closely with God does not mean understanding everything; it means staying near enough to trust Him even when we do not understand.
Think about walking with someone you love. You stay close. You talk. You listen. You move in the same direction. You adjust your pace. You are aware of their presence.
Our relationship with God is similar. We walk with God when we make room for Him in our day. We read Scripture. We pray. We become quiet enough to listen. We bring Him our questions, our worries, our plans, and our decisions. Slowly, we begin to recognize His voice more clearly.
Walking with God also means being willing to go where He leads. Sometimes His direction will be different from what the world around us expects. Noah certainly knew that. He followed God even when others could not understand what he was doing.
There will be moments when walking with God means standing apart from the crowd. The closer we walk with God, the less we need the approval of everyone around us.
Noah did not know what tomorrow would bring. Neither do we. But he knew the One who was leading him. And that was enough.
Today, perhaps the most important question is not, “Lord, where are You taking me?” It is, “Lord, am I walking closely enough with You to hear Your voice and follow?”
