When Options End

Sometimes life brings us to a place where we simply do not know what else to do. We have prayed, worked, sought advice, knocked on every door, and used every resource we have. Yet nothing seems to change.
Finally, we come to the humbling words: “I have done everything I can.”
It is precisely there that St. Gregory of Narek offers this powerful reminder in Prayer 53: “And when our resources are exhausted, you perform the greatest miracles.”
Perhaps the moment of exhaustion is not always a dead end. Sometimes it is a doorway. When our plans fail, our strength weakens, and our answers run out, we may finally become open to a path we could not see before. God does not always work by extending our old possibilities; sometimes He creates an entirely new one.
Again and again, Scripture and history remind us: what looks like the end of human possibility may become the beginning of God’s possibility.
The Israelites stood before the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army behind them. Humanly speaking, there was no road forward. But God opened a road where no road existed.
Abraham and Sarah reached an age when the promise of a child seemed impossible. Yet when human possibility had ended, God’s promise remained.
Centuries later, St. Mesrob Mashtots searched, studied, traveled, and even tested existing letters, but none could fully express the Armenian language. When human possibilities seemed exhausted, God answered him in a vision and revealed the letters of the Armenian alphabet.
Perhaps today you are facing something for which you no longer see an answer. You have done what you can. You are tired. The door seems closed. But do not confuse a closed door with a finished story.
When your resources are exhausted, God’s resources remain untouched. When you cannot see a way forward, God can still create one. When your strength ends, His grace does not.
So instead of saying, “There is no way,” pray: “Lord, I have reached the end of what I can do. Now help me trust what You can do.”
Sometimes our greatest miracles begin exactly there, at the place where our strength ends and our surrender begins. For when our resources are exhausted, God is only beginning to show us what grace can do.
