Your Word is a Lamp

In ancient times, following sunset, the sole source of illumination came from a torch. This torch consisted of a clay base about the size of a palm, filled with oil, which would burn through the wick.

In this Psalm, the word of God is likened to a torch (or a lamp, as we might say in English). Just as light is indispensable for a nighttime journey, keeping us safe from harm, so is the word of God an essential beacon in this dark and sinful world, illuminating our path toward salvation.

The Holy Scriptures encompass all that is necessary for our faith and salvation. They provide everything we need to lead a life pleasing to God. These Scriptures are the living words of God that teach, reprove, and counsel us, as the Apostle asserts: “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Therefore, let us not embark on a spiritual journey in darkness, bereft of the light-giving word of God. May we always carry His word with us like a torch, for it will guide our steps along straight paths, protect us from both seen and unseen dangers and lead us to a place of rest and into His eternal kingdom.
