The Sun Is Still There

Because I travel often, especially during the winter months, I have seen this beautiful picture many times. There are days when the sky is dark, rainy, and covered with heavy clouds. From the ground, everything looks gray. It almost feels as though the sun has disappeared.
But then the plane begins to rise. Little by little, it moves through the clouds, and suddenly everything changes. There it is—the sun, shining brightly, peacefully, powerfully, as though it had been there all along. And of course, it was. The clouds never removed it. They only hid it from view for a little while.
That image speaks so deeply to the spiritual life.
There are seasons when the heart is covered with clouds. We carry pain, weariness, uncertainty, grief, or unanswered questions. We pray, and everything feels quiet. We wait, and the waiting feels long. We look for joy, and it seems far away. In those moments, it is easy to feel as though the light has faded.
Some of you today are living under heavy clouds. Perhaps it is the cloud of sickness. Perhaps it is a broken relationship. Perhaps it is the burden of guilt. Perhaps it is anxiety about the future. Perhaps it is a private sorrow that no one else sees. Outwardly, you are smiling, but inwardly, the sky is gray.
Yet behind every dark sky, the sun is still there, shining with the same light, the same warmth, the same quiet strength. What is hidden from our eyes has not disappeared. It remains steady above the clouds, waiting for the moment to break through again.
And so it is with God. In weariness and waiting, the promise of Scripture remains clear: “The Lord will be your everlasting light” (Isaiah 60:19). Even when the road is long, and the soul feels tired, He is near, quietly and powerfully at work. His love does not weaken. His care does not diminish. His light continues to shine over your life.
So, lift your soul toward God with confidence. Lift your eyes above the cloud line. Lift your heart above what you cannot understand. Because above every cloud, beyond every sorrow, higher than every fear, steadier than every emotion, the Sun is still there.
