The Level Path

Back in 2018, when I was the Director of Ministries at the Eastern Diocese in New York City, I was at a crossroads in my ministry. I had questions. I had doubts. The road ahead seemed unclear. So I decided to do something radical—I went on a silent retreat at Ender’s Island in Mystic, Connecticut.
For three days, I turned off my phone. No calls, no texts, no distractions. I ate my meals in silence. Just me, God, and His Word. Each day, I spent hours reading and praying through the Book of Psalms. There are 150 chapters and 2,461 verses, but on the third day, one verse spoke to me with unmistakable clarity: “Let your good spirit lead me on a level path.” (Psalm 143:10)
As I read those words, something sacred happened. Deep within my heart, I heard a whisper—not from the outside, but from within: “Do not be afraid. My Spirit will lead you on a level path.”
In that moment, I felt a shift. The fear didn’t disappear instantly, but the weight lifted. I realized God was asking me to trust Him. It wasn’t my strategy, my plan, or my effort that would make the path straight—it was His Spirit leading me on a level path.
Looking back, I can see how true that promise has been. Just a week later, I was called to serve as the Vicar of St. Vartan Cathedral, then as Dean of the Gevorgyan Seminary in Armenia, and later to shepherd the faithful of the historic Eastern Diocese of America.
Every step, every door that opened, every challenge that became a blessing—it was His Spirit that guided me on a level path.
Maybe today you’re at your own crossroads. Maybe you’re standing in uncertainty—about your job, your health, your family, or your future. The ground beneath you feels uneven. Friends, do what I did: step away, lean in, and listen. God's Spirit is never silent. He is leading you, even when you can’t see the way.
You may not know what the road ahead looks like, but you don’t have to. What matters is Who is leading you. And He is faithful. He will not leave you lost. So take heart—His Spirit will lead you on a level path.
