Something Is Always Missing

There is something strange about the human heart. It is rarely satisfied with where it is.
We wait for something, pray for it, work for it, and finally receive it. For a while, we are happy. Then, almost without noticing, the heart begins looking toward the next thing.
On a hot day, we wish for cooler weather. In winter, we miss the warmth. We dream about getting away, and after a few days away, we begin to miss home. When we are young, we cannot wait to grow older. Later, we wonder where the years went.
The scenery changes, but the longing remains. Something always seems to be missing.
We often assume that the missing piece is somewhere ahead of us. Maybe another opportunity. Another relationship. Another achievement. Another trip. Another possession. We quietly tell ourselves, “When that happens, then I will finally be at peace.”
Then it happens. And before long, the heart begins looking again.
St. Augustine knew this experience very well. After searching for happiness in many places, he finally understood what his heart had been seeking: “Our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
The Holy Scripture expresses the same longing: “O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You” (Psalm 63:1).
Maybe that restlessness in us is not always something to be afraid of. Perhaps sometimes it is a reminder that we were created for more than the things of this world can give.
That does not mean the beautiful things of life do not matter. Enjoy them. Love deeply. Travel. Celebrate. Dream. Be grateful for every blessing God gives you. But do not ask these gifts to do what only God can do.
No person can carry the full weight of your heart. No success can give permanent peace. No destination can finally say, “Now you have arrived.” Every earthly joy is a gift, but it is not the Giver.
So the next time you feel that something is missing, do not rush to fill the emptiness. Be still and listen. Perhaps beneath all your smaller desires, your heart is really saying, “Lord, I am looking for You.” Because the deepest longing of the human heart is not for something more. It is for Someone.
And that Someone is God.
