Seeing in the Dark

Writer: Bishop Mesrop ParsamyanBishop Mesrop Parsamyan

In the early 90s, back in Armenia, electricity was scarce. People would get only a few hours of light each day. One Sunday at St. Sarkis Church in Yerevan, a young Der Hayr was delivering his sermon when suddenly everything went dark. Caught off guard, he hesitated, unsure whether to pause or wait for the power to return. Then, from the back of the church, a voice broke the silence, “Keep going, Der Hayr. We can still see God in the dark.”

Friends, you may be in a dark season right now. Maybe you don’t see how things are going to work out. The doors that once opened easily now seem locked shut. Maybe you’re facing challenges in your health, your finances, or your relationships, and the weight of uncertainty is pressing in. But remember, no matter how dark it looks around you, God still sees you. He’s still leading you. He’s still making a way!

The Bible says in Psalm 139:12, “Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.” That means no matter how dark it looks around you, God still sees you. Even when we can’t see Him in the dark, He knows right where we are. He’s ordering our steps. He’s working behind the scenes.

God does His greatest work in the dark. Joseph sat in a dark prison, falsely accused and forgotten, before he reached the palace and saved a nation. Jesus lay in a dark tomb, sealed away before the resurrection power was revealed to the world. St. Gregory the Illuminator spent thirteen years in the deep, dark pit of Khor Virap before God raised him up to bring the light of Christ to Armenia.

So, if you’re in a dark place today, don’t get discouraged. That darkness is not the end! Don’t let it stop you. When the power goes out, when life gets uncertain, when you don’t know what to do just keep going. Keep believing. Keep trusting. Because sometimes, it’s in the darkness that we see God most clearly. And the good news of the Gospel is this: even when we can’t see Him in the dark, He always sees us.
