Palm Trees

Palm trees are known for their beauty and the sweetness of their fruit. But have you ever considered the strength of the tall palm tree, especially during windy storms? Despite heights reaching the heavens, this flexible tree bends and sways during storms, after which it springs back to its original size without breaking. The bending does not weaken or break the tree; on the contrary, it makes the tree more durable and stronger. Trees generally snap, or at least lose a few branches, when faced with hurricane-strength winds. Not palm trees. These staples of the tropics typically bend during gusty weather.

The Holy Scriptures uses this image of the palm tree to describe those who have attached their will to God’s will and are righteous: “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree; Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.” Psalm 92:12-13.

Hurricanes and storms are unavoidable in life. Difficulties and sufferings enter our lives, at times unexpectedly, in ways that deprive us of happiness and peace. Thus, our God promises us that if we trust Him, we will flourish like the palm tree. And even if the strong storms of life bring difficulties that level us on the ground with heavy burdens, we will never break, and we shall stand tall again with strength and wisdom.

In times of difficulties, let us bring to the forefront of our minds those times in the long history of our people when, despite prolonged periods of suffering and injustice, they remained resolute in their thoughts, will, and hope in Christ. Invasions, massacres, and even genocide failed to break the spirit in our people. The all-powerful and compassionate God being our fortress, we have continued to live, create, believe, pray, and work.

Indeed, if we trust God and are “planted in the house of the Lord” and live in accordance with His holy, all-knowing will, we “shall flourish in the courts of our God.”
