Hope Through Tears

Sometimes we imagine that strong faith means being strong in the face of unbearable loss. We think we should have fewer questions, shed fewer tears, or somehow carry our grief with greater courage. But grief has no timetable, and God never asks us to hide our broken hearts from Him.
There is a very short verse in the Gospel that has always touched me deeply: “Jesus wept” (John 11:35).
Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead. He knew the tomb would open and His friend would walk out alive. And yet, when He stood beside Martha and Mary and saw the sorrow of those who loved Lazarus, He wept with them.
That is such a comforting image of our Savior. Jesus knows that resurrection is coming, but He still makes room for tears.
Our tears, then, are not signs that faith has failed. We can trust God and still miss someone terribly. We can believe in eternal life and still ache for one more conversation, one more familiar laugh, one more embrace.
For a parent grieving a child, that longing can enter every part of the day. A photograph, an empty chair, a birthday, or a familiar place can suddenly bring the sorrow close again. God sees those moments. He knows the name you whisper. He understands that every tear is also an expression of love.
And the child you love is known and loved by Him.
When your arms can no longer hold your child, you can entrust that precious life into the hands of Christ. You do not need to understand why this happened before turning toward Him. You can come with your questions, your exhaustion, and even your silence.
Some days, perhaps the only prayer you can offer is, “Lord, help me through this hour.” That prayer is enough. Receive the kindness of those who remember with you. Speak your child’s name. Allow a cherished memory to bring a smile without feeling that you have somehow betrayed your sorrow. Love and grief can live in the same heart.
Our Christian hope does not erase the pain of separation. It reminds us that separation will not have the final word.
Christ promises a day when death will be no more and God will wipe away every tear. Until that day, the Savior who once stood before a tomb and wept walks beside us through every valley of grief.
