GREAT LENT - Day 18: Thursday

“For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through His Spirit and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:14-15)

In this passage, St. Paul prays to God for all Christians in order for our inner beings to be strengthened through the work of the Holy Spirit and for our Lord Jesus Christ to dwell in our hearts richly. Only then will we be like a firm-rooted tree with its blossoming branches grounded in His love.

The life of a tree is based on the health of its roots. Every autumn, while the branches change color and fall, the root of the tree continues to remain strong so that in the spring, once again, it will blossom and bear fruit. Similarly, God’s love is that fertile ground where our souls mature. When our spiritual lives are well rooted in God’s boundless love, we receive the essential nutrients for our spiritual growth in order to withstand the forces of wind and overcome the storms in our lives.

However, to be grounded and rooted in God’s love, we must live in His presence through prayer, meditation, and contemplation. We must be in continual communion with Him, who loved us so much, as Apostle John says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Now, we can confidently plant our souls, hopes, and expectations in this fertile soil. At that time, no wind, storm, or hurricane will be able to shake us. Let us believe in God’s faithful love; let us continue to be filled by His abundance; and may we encourage others also to take part in this loving communion. With our roots firmly planted in Him, we will be victorious towards every temptation, difficulty, and struggle, and we will blossom and bear much fruit.
