God Remembers Every Name

On Sunday, May 17, I was at St. Mary Armenian Church in Livingston, NJ, for their 100th anniversary banquet. As I sat at the table, I noticed that the tablecloth looked old and a little unusual. When I looked more closely, I saw names sewn into the cloth.
At first, I began reading them out of simple curiosity. But soon I realized that these were the names of Armenian Church Youth Organization of America (ACYOA) members from St. Mary, from the years 1961 to 1964.
Each name represented a young person who once served, gathered, prayed, laughed, worked, and dreamed in that parish. They had their friendships, their hopes, their faith, and their own season of service. I am sure they never imagined that more than sixty years later, someone would still be reading their names at a banquet table.
This year, as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of ACYOA, that tablecloth became for me a beautiful reminder of how faith is passed from one generation to another.
The Psalmist says, “One generation shall praise Your works to another.” — Psalm 145:4
That is exactly what I saw in those sewn names. One generation praised God in their time. Today, another generation continues the same song. The voices change. The years pass. The world becomes different. But the faith continues.
Those young ACYOA members from 1961 to 1964 served in their moment. Today’s young people are called to serve in theirs. They may use different tools, speak in different ways, and face different challenges, but the calling remains the same: to love Christ, to serve His Church, and to carry our Armenian Christian faith into the future.
A life offered to God is never forgotten. Every prayer, every act of service, every hour given to the Church, every small sacrifice made with love becomes part of something eternal. What may seem small to us becomes precious in the eyes of God.
So, let us give thanks for the generations before us. Let us bless the young people among us now. And let us remember that we are all part of one great story of faith.
One generation praises. Another generation answers. And through it all, God remembers every name.
