Fully Awake

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration. The Gospels tell us that Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray. And as He prayed, His appearance changed before them: His face shone like the sun, and His garments became dazzling white. In that sacred moment, the divine glory of Christ broke through the veil of His humanity.

There’s a small but powerful verse in that story. The Gospel says, “When they were fully awake, they saw His glory.” (Luke 9:32). Not while they were dozing off. Not while they were half-aware. Not while they were scrolling through distractions or lulled into routine. Only when they were fully awake did they see it.

Sometimes the glory is right in front of us, but we’re not awake. God is showing up in our lives more than we realize. He's doing miracles, opening doors, sending the right people, and placing opportunities in our path. But if we're not spiritually awake, we can miss it.

We live in a time when it's easy to fall asleep with our eyes open. We go through the motions—wake up, go to work, check tasks off a list. We stay busy, but something inside still feels empty. We may attend church, say our prayers, read a verse or two, but deep down, we have stopped believing that miracles still happen.

The good news is that God knows how to wake us up.

Sometimes, He uses pain or loss to shake us, to open our eyes to His presence in our suffering. Other times, it’s love that wakes us—the kind of sincere, grace-filled love that softens the heart and helps us see differently. And then there are moments when we’re at the end of ourselves, crying out, “Lord, I need You.” It’s a cry Heaven always hears and responds to.

So, don’t settle for a half-awake life. Don’t sleep through the beauty God is writing into your story. Don’t miss the miracles hidden in the everyday. Open your heart. Listen for His voice.

Because just like the disciples, when we are fully awake—when we choose to live with faith, with expectation, with open eyes—we will see His glory in the church, in our home, at our job, in our relationships, and even in our struggles.
