Faith in the Fire

The story is told of a lone survivor of a shipwreck who was thrown upon an uninhabited island. After awhile he managed to build for himself a crude hut, a shelter, out of the few things he managed to save from the wreckage. That hut becomes his safe place, his home, his only hope for survival. Every day, he prays earnestly for deliverance, scanning the horizon for any sign of a ship.

One day, while the man is out hunting for food, something devastating happens—his hut goes up in flames. Everything he had salvaged, all that he held onto for security, was burning to the ground. But what the man thought was his greatest tragedy turned out to be the very thing that saved his life. That fire, which seemed like the end of the world, was God’s answer to his prayer. The same day, a ship arrived. “We saw your smoke signal,” the captain said.

Friends, sometimes, God lets our hut burn down to get us to where He wants us to be. When we’re holding on too tightly to our plans, our security, our version of how things should be, God may allow something to happen that we don’t understand. But it’s not to harm us; it’s to position us for something greater.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9). You may not see the full picture right now. It may feel like you’re standing in the ashes of what you thought was your future. But God’s plans for you are greater than anything you could imagine.

That fire in your life? It’s not the end. It’s a smoke signal to heaven. It’s a beacon of hope, and God is working all things together for your good. So don’t get stuck in the disappointment of the flames. Look up! Your rescue is on the way. The same God who allowed that fire is the God who is sending your ship. And soon, you’ll be able to look back and say, “That fire wasn’t the end of my story—it was just the beginning.”
