Cast Again

Last Thursday, I went fishing with my friend Dr. Henry Madalian at Green Pond, New Jersey. The water was quiet, and nothing was biting for a while, but we kept casting.

After some time, I asked him, “Henry, how can you remain so patient when we are not catching anything?” He smiled and said with confidence, “I feel something big is coming.”

There was no movement on the surface. We could not see what was beneath the water. Yet Henry kept waiting with expectation.

Then, before long, our lines tightened. Together, we caught two beautiful bass. We laughed, admired our catch, and then released the fish back into the water.

The catch was exciting, but more than that, it reminded me why I love fishing: fishing is hope experienced.

Every cast is an act of trust. We don't cast because we see the fish. We cast because we believe they're there. That's why, even when the water stays still, a true fisherman doesn't quit. He waits, watches, and casts again.

Christian hope is very much like that. It is not wishful thinking or pretending that everything will always go our way. Christian hope is the confidence that God is present and faithful, even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.

St. Paul writes: “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all…. But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently” (Romans 8:24–25).

Hope begins precisely where sight ends. If we could already see the answer, we would not need hope. Hope sustains us in the space between the prayer and its answer, between the cast and the catch.

There are times when our prayers seem unanswered, our efforts appear fruitless, and the waters of life remain still. Yet God’s silence does not mean His absence, and waiting does not mean that He has forgotten us.

Because we trust the One who holds our lives, every prayer, every act of love, and every faithful step becomes another cast into the deep waters of God’s promises.

So, friends, don't let a season of waiting steal your hope. When you're tired, cast again. When the waters seem empty, trust again. Wait with expectant hope, knowing the God who called you is faithful to bring the catch.
