Brick by Brick

While visiting the Colosseum yesterday, I noticed a pile of stones and stopped to take a photograph. Those stones reminded me of an old proverb: “Rome was not built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour.”
We often focus on the first part: “Rome was not built in a day.” We use it to remind ourselves to be patient. But the second part is equally important: they were laying bricks every hour.
Patience does not mean doing nothing. It means continuing faithfully, even when progress seems slow.
Standing near the Colosseum, I thought of the first Christians who shed their blood in Rome rather than deny Christ. Their faith was built through daily prayer, courage, sacrifice, and small acts of faithfulness. When the moment of testing came, they stood firm because Christ had already made them strong within.
We all want quick results. We want our prayers answered immediately. We want our wounds healed overnight. We want broken relationships restored, dreams fulfilled, and our spiritual lives transformed without delay.
But God usually works differently.
He builds our lives slowly through daily prayer, small acts of kindness, quiet forgiveness, difficult lessons, and faithful obedience. Many of these moments seem insignificant when they happen. Yet each one becomes a stone in the life God is building within us.
Perhaps today you feel that your progress is too slow. You may look at your life and see only scattered stones, unfinished work, and unanswered questions.
But God sees the structure taking shape. Do not become discouraged because everything is not yet complete. Keep laying the next brick. Say the prayer. Offer the forgiveness. Make the phone call. Perform the act of kindness. Take the next faithful step. “Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” —Galatians 6:9
Rome was not built in a day. Neither is a life of faith. But every day, by the grace of God, something is being built within us. Our faith becomes deeper. Our hearts become softer. Our character becomes stronger. Our lives become more firmly rooted in Christ.
So do not underestimate today’s small act of faithfulness. The stone you place today may become part of the foundation that supports you tomorrow. Keep going. God is still building. Brick by brick.
