According to the Tradition of the Church, St John the Baptist was born in EIN KAREM, 4.6 miles southwest of Jerusalem. Ein Kerem is named after the spring (Hebrew: Ein = spring, Kerem = vineyard). According to tradition, during Visitation (Luke 1:39-56) Virgin Mary stopped here to drink from the spring, and it was named after Her.
Եկեղեցու Ս. Աւանդութեան համաձայն, Սուրբ Յովհաննէս Մկրտիչը ծնուել է ԷԻՆ ՔԱՐԵՄ քաղաքում՝ Երուսաղէմից 7.5 կիլոմետր հեռաւորութեան վրայ։ Էին Քարեմ եբրայեցերենից թարգմանաբար նշանակում է «Խաղողի այգիների աղբիւր»։ Աղբիւրն այսօր կոչվում Սուրբ Կոյս Մարիամի անունով, քանզի համաձայն աւանդութեան իր Այցելութեան ժամանակ (Ղուկաս 1:39-56) Աստուածամայրը խմում է այդ աղբիւրից՝ օրհնելով այն։
